First Online Multiplayer HoloLens Game Lets You Battle with Virtual Cars Against Others Anywhere

On Friday, game developer PreviewLabs introduced the very first online multiplayer game for its Microsoft HoloLens.

Available at no cost on the Microsoft Store, Buggy Blasters is a real-time strategy game where players place and navigate arenas of virtual remote control cars. Together with hand gestures or a gamepad, players may drive cars round the play space and take the opposition. The automobiles that gamers aren’t controlling drive around and take the opposing group autonomously, like the towers in a tower defense sport.

The game can be played between two HoloLens users in the same or separate places. Leveraging the environment-scanning capacities of this HoloLens, every player scans their individual rooms, together with boundaries set dependent on a frequent area which accommodates both environments.

“The HoloLens actually scans the space to be able to get what they require spatial comprehension,” explained Bernard Francois, founder of PreviewLabs, in a behind-the-scenes video. “That means the gameplay may take into consideration the actual shape of all the objects inside the room along with the walls and where everything is.”

“The very first thing that we started with was taking the idea of owning a toy car, like an RC car in your house, but an electronic one, and being able to drive it around,” said Francois. “And then, fine, what if you do some thing similar to possibly a tower defense or RTS.”

Based on gameplay footage, it’s doubtful that Buggy Blasters will influence many players to shell out $3,000 to your HoloLens headset simply to play the match. It’s the look of a first-generation cellphone game, using underwhelming images. But while the sport itself may not be earth-shattering, the match (that PreviewLabs bills as a model) does set the basis for assembling additional, similar online multiplayer HoloLens applications.

“What we heard from Buggy Blasters is actually really applicable to other experiences utilizing the HoloLens too,” said Francois. “So we learned a great deal from this, therefore it could be really very helpful, for example, for collaborative encounters where people maybe should work collectively in augmented reality”
